The mind-uploading service is "100 percent fatal"
You can now pay to have your brain uploaded to a computer and preserved forever.
A startup called Netcome is offering the service.
They believe that your mind can be backed up and used to "recreate your consciousness."
Netcome claims your brain will be preserved well enough to "keep all its memories intact...from that great chapter of your favourite book to the feeling of cold winter air, baking an apple pie, or having dinner with your friends and family."
However, there's a nasty twist - Nectome says its procedure can only work if the brain is fresh. So, that means you're still alive when you're hooked up to a machine and injected with special embalming chemicals.
The company has described the process as "100 percent fatal".
Netcome's service is not yet for sale and may not be for several years. There's also no evidence that memories can be found in dead tissue.
But 25 prospective customers have already joined a waiting list for a deposit of $10,000, which is fully refundable if you change your mind (no pun intended!).
One of them is Sam Altman, a 32 year old tech billionaire. Altman's told MIT Technology Review he’s pretty sure minds will be digitised in his lifetime:
"I assume my brain will be uploaded to the cloud."
