A naked hermit who lived on a desert island for 29 years has been sent back to Japan.
Masafumi Nagasaki was removed from Sotobanari, on the Yaeyama Islands, which are the most remote parts of the Japanese archipelago.
The 82 year old had been living on Sotobanari, which is about 1km in diameter, in solitude since 1989. He had made it his retirement home and it was his wish to die there.
He braved typhoons, venomous snakes and biting insects and lived without fresh water and electricity.
However, Masafumi was forced to return to civilisation after he became unwell and he was too weak to resist police.
He became known as "the naked hermit" because of his fondness for living in the nude. He featured in a documentary about castaways three years ago.
He told documentary maker Alvaro Cerezo: "I will never find a paradise like this. I’ve never felt sad here."
It's believed Masafumi is now living in a government home 60 kilometres away from the island and is not allowed to return home.
So sad!
