More than 70 donkeys could be put to sleep as their Donegal sanctuary faces closure because of lack of funds.

Donegal Donkey Sanctuary has been open since 2006 and has rehabilitated and rehomed 600 of the adorable animals ever since.

However, managers say the santuary is full while increased food costs and veterinary and farrier bills mean it faces an uncertain future.

A plea posted on the refuge's Facebook page says it's currently not accepting any new animals:

"Following an exceptionally busy winter with a record number of donkeys coming into our care we find ourselves in financial crisis. From today we will no longer be able to take on any new cases."

GoFundMe

It's not all bad news though - A Go Fund Me page has been set up to try and secure the sanctuary's future. Within just 24 hours of being set up it had reached €10,000 of its €25,000 target.

Click on Donkey from Shrek to view the page and donate a few quid to secure the donkeys' future.
