The Galway Mayor hasn't held back!

The mayor of Galway City has launched an attack on the unofficial Rag Week celebrations.

Niall McNelis has taken aim at pub and nightclub owners in Galway City who actively promote Rag Week.

He said both the NUI Galway and GMIT Students’ Unions have no involvement  in Rag Week, and that the week has become nothing more than a business driven attempt to take money from students, making them “a laughing stock”.

“When Rag Week was set up, it was done to raise funds for local charities, but that has stopped now,” Cllr McNelis told the Connacht Tribune.

The official Rag Week was banned by both GMIT and NUIG in 2012 following repeated instances of anti-social behaviour and out of control drinking.

This year Gardaí revealed 10 arrests were made for Public Order offences on the busiest night, Donegal Tuesday,
