New teachers are to be paid a €2000 incentive to take up jobs.

It comes as schools struggle to hire staff due to high accommodation costs and the options to teach abroad.

According to the Irish Times, qualified teachers who take up a full time role for the coming school year would receive the payment next summer.

The cost and duration of the PME are also factors turning some graduates away from teaching.

Schools have reported a number of vacant positions, despite a record 121,000 teachers registered with the Teaching Council.

Teachers’ unions and principals say many schools were forced to drop or limit access to key subjects due to staff shortages at secondary level.

The incentive payment will be made to applicants who satisfy the eligibility criteria in 2025.

General Secretary of the INTO - John Boyle - says its very much needed, but they want to see details quickly before more young teachers head abroad:

"In primary alone about 40- 50 thousand children every single day didn't have qualified teachers in front of their class"

"We've had about 3000 vacancies this year"

"The jobs are being advertised, the schools are closing on Friday, and these young teachers are making decisions."
