Third-Level Courses With Highest Drop Out Rates Revealed

New research shows that third-level students who are doing computing are the most likely to drop out of their course.

The Higher Education Authority has found that 45 per cent of those who pick a computing course do not stick with it.

Education is the area of study that retains the most students, with a completion rate of more than 90 per cent, while four out of every five level eight students will complete their course, with girls more likely to graduate than boys.

Meanwhile students from well-off and disadvantaged areas are just as likely to complete college, provided they do well in the Leaving Cert.

The HEA research shows performance in the Leaving Cert. can predict the likelihood of a student finishing third level education.

Almost half of people who got fewer than 200 points did not complete their course, while completion rates for students who got between 505 and 550 points stood at 95 per cent.
