The Sam Maguire Cup went missing during a Dublin tour of New York this weekend.

GAA chiefs are investigating after the famous trophy vanished while at an Irish bar in Manhattan.

Footage of fans with Sam emerged on social media, with them taking off with it in the early hours of the morning.

However, the Sunday Mirror reports that the iconic silverware was back safe with the All Ireland title holders and on a flight bound for Chicago yesterday.

Last time the Sam went missing, in 1980, during a visit headed by then Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan, the FBI were called after the trophy disappeared from Gaelic Park.

It later reappeared with the words ‘Up Roscommon’, ‘Brook Inn Bronx NY’ and ‘IRA’ scratched onto it.
