More than 70 per cent of 18 to 24 year-olds in Ireland say the would consider emigrating

The National Youth Council is calling on the government to face up to the struggles of young people in Ireland

This Tuesday the country will celebrate International Youth Day.

While events will be held across the country, the National Youth Council believes the day should be used to highlight issues facing Ireland's young people.

Figures from the council show a 26 year old born in the 90s earns considerably less than those born in the 70s or 80s would have, at the same age.

Also, 6 in 10 Irish young people still live at home with their parents - with the average age for a person to move out of their parents' home is now 28 years old.

More than 70 per cent of 18 to 24 year-olds in Ireland say the would consider emigrating.

The National Youth Council says the continued housing crisis as well as the rising cost of living is pushing young people out.

Director of Policy and Advocacy Paul Gordon says Ireland will lose thousands more of its young people if nothing is done:

"We do have really low levels of youth unemployment compared to the past. Often people were driven abroad by lack of jobs, now there are opportunities here."

He continued, "They might not be as well paid as people would like, but there are opportunities. Unfortunately, they're [young people] are looking elsewhere, so we need to look into the reasons behind that and housing is one of the drivers."
