Five counties will be under a status yellow wind warning this afternoon.

Galway, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo will be impacted from 1pm until 9pm today.

Met Éireann says that those counties can expect very strong winds from the south west this afternoon and evening. Winds will be strongest at the coast with some severe gusts. There's also a possibility of wave overtopping.

Motorists should also be wary of hazardous driving conditions in exposed areas.

Here's the full weather forecast for the rest of the week:

Wednesday

It'll be windy today with widespread heavy showers. Those will merge to longer spells of rain in places, with the chance of hail and thunder. Westerly winds will increase strong to near gale force and gusty, with some severe gusts, especially along Atlantic coasts. There'll be some sunny spells too though; brightest in the southeast. Highs of 11 degrees.

Thursday

Thursday will bring a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. There's also a chance of hail or sleet on high ground. Highs of 10 degrees.

Friday

A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers too on Friday. There is the chance of some wintry showers, mainly on hills and mountains. Highs of 9 degrees.
