'Saharan Outbreak' you say?

After a disappointing start to the summer, the weather gods may finally be smiling on us with temperatures are set to rise over the coming days.

Met Eireann is predicting warmer and more humid weather into next week.

There's even been reports that temperatures could rise as 27 degrees, due to a heatwave dubbed the 'Saharan Outbreak'.

The same heatwave is expected to bring temperatures of up to 44 degrees in Italy and Spain and 40 degrees in Germany.

Speaking to the Irish Times Met Éireann forecaster Liz Walsh cautioned there is still “a lot to play for” in terms of the forecast for next week as Ireland’s proximity to the low pressure system could potentially see heavy showers break out anywhere.

However, she said high temperatures across the country are certain.

Looking at the more short term.

The rest of today (Friday) looks decent enough, with most places staying dry and hovering between 15 and 19 degrees.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is set to be fully dry in most places, except for the chance of showers in the southwest during the evening, temperatures will range 15 to 20 degrees.

Sunday will see some rain in southern counties, which will push north during the day but all in all it will be a warm day in most places with highs of 15 to 20 degrees.

Looking towards the beginning of next week the national forecaster said: ''Temperatures several degrees above normal, generally into the low 20s, and even a little higher on some of the days later in the week.''

''Whilst there will be lengthy spells of summer sunshine, some heavy thundery showers will break out from time to time too. Easterly breezes will be replaced by more southerly ones later in the week.''

While its still a far cry from the fabled summer of '18, its something to hopefully build off!

And as for this 'Saharan Outbreak' well lets just wait and see...
