Ireland is a glorious little country.

We're the land of saints and scholars. The land of forty shades of green ... and the land of very odd place names.

While Muff in Donegal gets most of the publicity, our island is also home to the more hidden gems of Killywilly and Bastardstown. Here are some of the lesser known place names in Ireland that might give you a giggle:

Killywilly, Co Cavan

Yes. This is an actual place located east of Ballyconnell in the county. There's also a Killywilly Lough if you ever fancy a dip.

Muff Crescent in Nobber, Co Meath

Surely someone was doing this for a laugh when they named a Muff Crescent in Nobber?? The postmen must be having a field day.

Gowel, Co Leitrim

Nope, this one wasn't named by The Rubberbandits but you'd be forgiven for thinking it was.

Termonfeckin, Co Louth

Sounds like a place that Father Jack would have christened but Termonfeckin is actually named after a Saint Feichin - the patron saint of swear words*.

*that part is made up but there IS a Saint Feichin!

Blueball, Co Offaly

We're sure the population of Blueball in Offaly have heard all the jokes at this stage.

Cum, Co Mayo

No comment needed.

Muckanaghederdauhaulia, Co Galway

A tenner for anyone who can pronounce this correctly first time around.

Spink, Co Laois

Sounds more like an insult than a place name. "That fella's a pure spink".

Bastardstown, Co Wexford

Wexford is also home to the likes of Horetown and Fannystown. Will someone check if they're alright down there?

Tubercurry, Co Sligo

There's a Curry and a Tubbercurry in Sligo. Just don't drive through there on an empty stomach!
