The issue has sparked outrage among rural communities in particular.

The Environment Minister says people won't be arrested for burning turf when a planned ban takes effect.

Eamon Ryan says the draft regulations, to end the sale and distribution of smoky fuel, will take effect from September.

But Minister Ryan says people will still be allowed to burn turf they've already bought, or cut from their own land.

Eamon Ryan says there's been a lot of scaremongering over these proposals.

"We're not going to be there waving fingers at people or blaming people or telling them what to do," Minister Ryan said.

"Some of the news we heard last night that some poor person in the country would be raided or arrested for burning the wrong fuel - that's never attended," he added.

Sinn Fein is due to bring a motion to the Dail on Tuesday.

They're calling for the plans to be scrapped over the negative impact it would have on households in rural areas.

A Sinn Fein TD says the government's plans to ban the sale of turf have been handled "very poorly".

Roscommon-Galway Deputy Claire Kerrane, says a ban would cause hardship for rural communities.

"There's been a lot of confusion and a lot of worry, particularly for older people in rural communities who rely on turf and have done so for generations," Deputy Kerrane said.

"What's at issue here doesn't appear to be those who are cutting turf domestically for themselves, and that will cause huge difficulty in rural communities," she added.
