Met Eireann has upgraded the weather warning for Co. Clare to Red.

Violent gusts of up to 150 km/h are expected in the county later this evening, the warning is valid from 8pm this evening until 11pm.

The national forecaster explains what a red warning means: ''The issue of RED level severe weather warnings should be a comparatively rare event and implies that recipients take action to protect themselves and/or their properties; this could be by moving their families out of the danger zone temporarily; by staying indoors; or by other specific actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the weather conditions.''

Meanwhile a status Orange warning will come into effect for Galway, Cork, Clare, Kerry and Limerick from 7pm and Tipperary and Waterford from 10pm.

Wind speeds of 65-80 km/h along with gusts of up to 110 to 130 km/h are expected in those counties.

A yellow wind warning will also come into effect for Connacht, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly and Donegal from 11pm tonight.
