*Whistles* 'Ruxi!'

Uber-style taxis which are being referred to as 'ruxis' are a step closer to becoming a reality for rural Ireland.

The National Transport Authority plans to run a pilot scheme for grants for people who want to begin running a rural taxi service.

The process of getting a licence and the cost of insurance is expected to ease through the initiative.

Fine Gael TD Jim Daly, who first proposed the idea, said the proposal would be to assist those living in isolated areas.

''The national transport authority have confirmed to me that next month they will begin a trial period'', he said.

The idea is based on the Uber system which lets local drivers and passengers needing a lift find each other via an app.
