The RSA and Gardaí are asking drivers to take extra care.

There's been a slight increase in road deaths compared to this time last year.

Provisional figures show 50 people have lost their lives on Irish roads to date.

That's compared to 27 in the same period last year.

We're being urged to plan our safe return home, in advance when going out this weekend.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Gardaí are issuing an urgent road safety appeal to all road users to take care this Easter bank holiday weekend.

They want all road users to slow down and wear seatbelts.

They're also reminding people not to drive when impaired, or distracted, particularly by illegally using your phone while driving, or when tired.

And they're reminding us to watch out for vulnerable road users over this Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Paula Hilman is Assistant Commissioner, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, An Garda Síochána.

She has said that road safety is "everyone's responsibility".

"We all need to examine our behaviour and ensure that we do not contribute to fatal and serious injury collisions," she added.

Ms Hilman said that Gardaí will be focusing on a number of things to ensure road safety.

It includes speeding, drink/drug driving, non-wearing of seatbelts and using a mobile phone while driving.

While she also confirmed that Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints will be taking place across the country.
