Up to 20 times more shooting stars than usual will be visible over Ireland tonight.

We're in the midst of the best meteor shower of the year - the Geminid Shower - which is reaching its peak this week.

Astronomy Ireland is appealing to star-gazers to count how many they see every 15 minutes and log their reports on astronomy-dot-ie.

Editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine, David Moore says visibilty should be good tonight:

"If you wrap up well you can still enjoy the shooting stars and we do expect a lot of clear skies during this week so conditions are actually perfect!

The only problem for people living in the countryside who always see the feint ones and get a slightly better show, is that the moon is going to rise just after 10 o'clock.

But because of those fireballs, even people in cities can get great displays."

Meanwhile, Met Eireann is forecasting it to remain generally clear and dry in a light northerly breeze, though there will be a few showers in the north and northwest, falling as sleet and snow at times.

If you're going out to watch though, make sure to wrap up warm - temperatures are due to fall to as low as minus 6!
