This will lead to "hazardous travelling conditions" and some travel disruption in some parts of the country.
Frost and ice will set in quickly later on tonight with temperatures dropping to 0 and -3 degrees.
But as cloud thickens, temperatures will rise overnight and the frost and ice will clear.
On Thursday, showers early in the day will turn into sleet or snow in the evening.
Thunderstorms are also possible on Thursday for Atlantic coastal counties.
A similar warning has been issued for Northern Ireland.
The UK Met Office warned people in Antrim, Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry that sleet, hail and snow may lead to travel disruption from 8.00pm on Thursday to 11.00am on Friday.
