A new global study has suggested that 40% of Irish people are considered binge drinkers.
The study in the Lancet medical journal, says that when broken down to genders this equates to 54% of men and 26% of women.
Alcohol intake in Ireland has grown, up from 12.3 litres in 2010 to 13.2 litres in 2017.
The World's Heaviest Female Drinkers
The study also found that Irish women are the 4th heaviest female drinkers in the world, out of a table of 189 countries.
Only women in Lithuania, Moldova and the Czech Republic drink more than the Irish. Overall, Irish people come fifth in the world rankings, drinking more than 13 litres of alcohol a year.
Future World Drinking Trends
The study has stated that over 40% of Irish people could be classified as binge drinking while the number of teetotalers is also dropping, going from 19 percent in 1990 to 9 percent in 2017.
