A new survey suggests Ireland's Covid restrictions are the second softest in the world.
The Oxford University study puts Ireland only above Mongolia in terms of current curbs to prevent the spread of the virus.
A report in today's Sunday Times says the scores were based on a study of 185 countries.
Just a year ago, the same database showed Ireland with the 8th most stringent lockdown in the world.
There were growing calls last week for the government to reintroduce some public health restrictions, such as mask-wearing on public transport.
It was after a surge in hospital cases, with today's figure at 1,569.
While there are 52 people with Covid in ICU.
Luke O'Neill, a professor of immunology at Trinity, thinks infections will peak within the next three weeks, with "normality" to return by May.
However, he is calling for the requirement of mask-wearing to return for public transport.
O'Neill said that the BA.2 Covid variant is highly transmissible.
And he said that mask wearing in crowded settings, such as on buses or trains, would help lower the dose of the virus.
