Winter is taking control.

Below average temperatures, frost and freezing temperatures...that's apparently what awaits us for the rest of the week, good times.

Met Éireann's latest forecast makes for grim reading if you're intolerant to the cold, with things set to get especially chilly on Thursday night.

The national forecaster predicts we'll see temperatures drop to a minimum of -3 tomorrow night, with frost and a risk of icy patches in places.

Showers are expected to scatter throughout the country during the rest of the week, while Saturday night is also expected to be freezing, as temperatures could reach a low of -2.

And it's not getting any warmer on Sunday, as Met Éireann's forecast is "cold and frosty overnight," with lows of zero or -1.

But wait, there's more! Things aren't going to improve any time soon it seems, with the outlook for early next week saying: ''Changeable and unsettled weather will continue into the early days of next week (at least). Remaining cold, with temperatures 2 to 3 degrees below normal and with a continuing risk of frost at night.''

Blankets, and lots of them.
