MEPs have today passed an EU law to protect women against psychological and physical violence.

Under the new rule, all violence against women online will be criminalised, including cyber stalking, harassment, flashing, misogynist hate speech online, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, including deep fakes.

The legislation will also work to prevent domestic violence and all other forms of physical violence against women.

Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Andrews is pushing for Ireland to go even further, and to increase street lighting and shorten the distance between bus stops to make walking at night safer for women.

"We should have a designated women's safety officer on that Dublin task force. They'll address simple things like improved street lighting and the way we design our public spaces.

"Things like what will make women feel much safer on our streets."
