He faced backlash within his own party over his decision to nominate a new Northern Ireland First Minister.
Paul Givan was given the role following Arlene Foster's departure - with Michelle O'Neill re-instated as deputy First Minister.
But a majority of DUP representatives were against nominating someone to the role over a concession on Irish language laws.

First Minister Paul Givan was due to attend a North-South Ministerial meeting in Armagh, however it is understood to not being going ahead.
There's mounting speculation that Sir Jeffrey Donaldson will succeed Poots as DUP leader.
Several DUP sources now say it's Sammy Wilson or.Jeffrey Donaldson for DUP Leader.
