Last year was slightly higher than the previous few years.

Over 3,200 people have been detected driving while three times over the alcohol limit over the past three years.

According to freedom of information figures, the figure for 2021 was 1,149.

It's a slight increase on the previous two years when a total of just over 2,100 people were three times over the limit.

Brian Farrell, from the Road Safety Authority, says people need to be careful the morning after a night out.

"Alcohol-related fatal collisions are happening the morning after," Farrell said.

He added that in some cases people are making the right decisions on the night before, while they are out drinking by not driving.

However, he said people need to also be cautious and not drive the morning after.

"We're looking at 1 in 10 collisions happen the morning after that are alcohol related," Farrell added.

Earlier this year, it was reported that 10% of people admit they have driven the day after a night out over the past year while possibly being over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

The Irish Examiner reported on the survey from AA Ireland.

It also found that a further 3% of people said they had travelled with someone who they believed was over the limit in the last 12 months.

16% of those who responded to the survey said they 'weren't sure' whether they had been in a car with someone who was over the limit or not over the same period.
