"Many people are struggling and so many people are helping others so we thought we'd do our bit".

A farmer from Co. Donegal is giving away a field full of his vegetables absolutely free, reports The Independent.

The generous farmer is Gerard Diver, from Divers Farm, and has told the public to "fill their boots" with his crops, as he is unable to move due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

The farm, located in Inishowen, is well known for producing and delivering high-quality vegetables to shops and restaurants.

He wants to honour his friend's memory by giving away the yields to anybody who may be in need or struggling to cope in these difficult times.

"We supply these turnips to shops and restaurants and they are of a very high quality. It would be an insult to give them away for cattle feed'', he said.

"So we thought in honour of William we would open the gates and let people take them away with them.

"William was a great man and spent a lot of time and hard work in that field planting those turnips with Daniel and it's nice to think that something like this will come of it.

"Many people are struggling and so many people are helping others so we thought we'd do our bit," he added.

He also pleaded for anyone who comes to claim the free vegetables to practice correct social distancing measures.
