Acting classes are being provided to doctors to help them break bad news to women.

The Irish Independent reports that the move is aimed at tackling criticism of the 'patriarchal and 'insensitive' approach to women.

Obstetricians are taking acting workshops with coaches from the Abbey Theatre to improve communications with patients who may be distressed.

It comes after women voiced their upset on RTÉ's Liveline, over distressing experiences in Irish maternity hospitals.

A spokesperson for the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists told the Irish Independent that drama workshops will allow doctors to assess and improve their dealings with patients in difficult situations.
