Wild week awaits as Met Éireann predicts 'wintry showers' on higher ground

Met Éireann is warning of sub-zero temperatures and wintry showers this week.

Unsettled weather is forecast over the coming days with sleet and snow on higher ground on Wednesday and Thursday.

While night time temperatures will fall to as low as minus two degrees.

Here's what's in store day by day:

Monday night: Cold lows of 2C but it will remain a mainly cold and dry night with just the odd isolated shower.

Tuesday: Cold and mainly clear at first with some showers affect northwestern and eastern coasts. Overnight lows of 1 to 4 degrees, in mostly moderate westerly winds.

Wednesday: Outbreaks of rain and sleet will continue overnight across the country on Wednesday night

Met Eireann says that there will be a "risk of some wintry falls on higher ground" with temperatures dropping to as low as -1C.

Thursday: Scattered showers will affect Atlantic coastal counties. Highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees.

The showers will ease overnight and it will be cold and clear with widespread frost. Lows of -1 to +2 degrees.

Friday: Come Friday, the temperatures will drop to -2C with sharp frost developing on Friday night.

Summary...it's cold.
