The cost of a bag of coal is expected to rise by €4.50 from tomorrow

It's due to an increase in the cost of materials.

The cost of a bag of coal is expected to rise by 4 euro 50 cents from tomorrow.

CPL Fuels said it was raising the price of coal, in response to an increase in the cost of materials, and the war in Ukraine.

An estimated 80,000 homes countrywide depend on coal for heating.

The charity Alone has called on the government to intervene to prevent a further rise in fuel poverty.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach says that the "war will have an impact" on Ireland's economy.

Micheál Martin said the war in Ukraine will lead to further pressure on food and fuel over the coming weeks.

He was speaking on a diplomatic trip to London where the UK's response to the refugee crisis was discussed.

The Taoiseach says the cost of living is going to continue to rise.

"It looks very likely that Ukraine will not be planting this season, which has very serious repercussions across the continent, which will impact on Ireland," the Taoiseach said.

"That's why there have been discussions with the Irish farming organisations."

"The war will have an impact, the precise nature of that impact is yet to be determined, but commodity prices are going through the roof, basically," he added.

The Taoiseach has also confirmed that Ireland has taken in 5,500 Ukrainian refugees so far.

While more than 2 million people have fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries to escape Russia's invasion.
