More protections for casual and low-paid staff come into effect today
Measures aimed at giving more protection to casual and low-paid workers come into effect today.
The legislation restricts the use of zero hour contracts by employers - and ensures anyone called into work but then told they're not needed gets a minimum payment.
General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Patricia King, says it's a positive development that those in precarious employment now have more rights:
"Each employee will be entitled to a written statement of their terms of employment within 5 days of being hired so the employer has to tell the new employee of their daily and weekly working hours and how their pay is calculated. that's really important for employees starting off"
