Talk of a new Bank Holiday came mid way through 2021, as a way to mark the work of frontline workers during the pandemic and remember those who lost their lives to Covid-19.

Since then though, all we've really had is speculation about when the day would be, with nothing overly concrete to go on.

Today though, the Tanáiste Leo Varadkar has said plans are afoot for a new national day, as well as a bumper bank hol for St. Patricks Day.

It's reported the Government is working on a proposal for a double holiday for the 17th and 18th of March to mark our National day.

Meanwhile, St. Brigid's Day is expected to become Ireland's new permanent Bank Holiday.

Both of the public holidays are set to come in from 2023.
