There was an increase the second half of 2021.
The National Ambulance Service received almost 1,400 hoax or fake calls last year.
Figures in the Sunday Independent show the number of pranks or fake reports rose in the second half of 2021.
The Service also recorded higher numbers in school holiday months with over 150 in both of June and July.
Call centre staff will escalate a call to a supervisor if some conditions are met.
An example would be if the caller is heard laughing.
For a call to be categorised as a hoax, the caller usually ends the conversation before providing enough detail to warrant sending an ambulance.
Independent.ie report they also arose "where the criteria for dispatching an ambulance were not met or in cases where a crew did respond but nothing was found."
The paper also reports the service received more than 363,000 calls last year, of which only a small fraction were hoax calls.
