28% of Irish adults are still living in their family home

Ireland has seen a rise in adults who are still living in their family home.

While the number of people living with their parents is one of the biggest increases in the EU, it's still below average.

22% of adults aged 25 to 34 lived with their parents in 2010. However, that number rose to 28% in 2019.

The numbers come from a report by Eurofound, which shows the EU average is just over 30%. Reduced home ownership, limited rental properties and affordability are among the reasons people remain in their family home.

The age at which at least half of people in the EU were living outside their parental home increased from 26 to 28 between 2007 and 2019.

Meanwhile, recent census findings also showed a drop in overall homeownership of 4% between 2011 and 2022.
