There’s been a surge in the number of tenants being given notice to vacate their rental properties.

The Residential Tenancies Board is reporting a 58% increase in the number of eviction notices issued in the first 6 months of 2022, compared with the final 6 months of last year.

Almost 3,000 notices to quit were issued between January and the end of June, with the RTB saying the main reason is landlord’s quitting the private rental market so they can sell their properties.

Sinn Fein, who obtained the figures, is now calling for a further ban on evictions, like that enacted during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Housing spokesperson Eoin O’Broin says there needs to be a crisis response with an acceleration in the provision of social housing.
