Germany's reproduction rate has jumped to 2.88.

A record amount of confirmed Covid-19 infections have been reported by the World Health Organization yesterday.

The WHO confirmed 183,020 people tested positive to the deadly virus wthin the 24-hour period, with the biggest increase from North and South America - where 116,000 recorded across both continents.

Total global cases have passed 8.7 million with more than 461,000 deaths, the WHO added.

Meanwhile in Europe, Germany's coronavirus reproduction rate jumped to 2.88 yesterday, up from 1.79 a day earlier, health authorities said.

This means each person in Germany is passing on the infection to almost three others, causing fears of renewed restrictions on activity in Europe's largest economy.

Despite the WHO’s latest COVID-19 update, there was positive news in Ireland, with no new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
