More than 1 in 5 Irish people were unemployed this month. 45% of people aged between 15 and 24 got some form of unemployment assistance in June.

The new figures released by the Central Statistics Office show the impact Covid-19 continues to have on the labour market.

Including the Pandemic Unemployment Payment, 22% of men and 23.5% of women received unemployment assistance in June. That gives an average of 22.5% - which is down from just over 26% in May.

The Pandemic Unemployment Payment is the €350 a week payment people get if they lost their job during the Covid-19 crisis.

This month, the unemployment rate was 45.4% among adults aged 15 to 24, and 19.2% among people over 25. The CSO says these stats represent the upper limit of the true rate of unemployment, as many of the job losses may be temporary.
