Micheál Martin and Boris Johnson met in Co. Down this afternoon.

The Taoiseach says Ireland and the UK's approach to Covid-19 is not exactly 'harmonious' after a meeting with Boris Johnson.

Micheál Martin and the British Prime Minister met at Hillsborough Castle in Co. Down this afternoon, for the first time since Martin became Taoiseach.

The Taoiseach says the two countries aren't exactly 'synergistic' on Covid, but added that many European countries aren't.

''I think there was mutual understanding of where we were both coming from here and if you like a shared concern about the continuing impact of Covid'', he said.

''There was multiple sharing observations in terms of the impact, than any sort of, you know, heckling of the other side...it's not harmonious or synergistic and terms of the different approaches in travel''.

The North's Deputy First Minister, Michelle O'Neill, also met the British Prime Minister, and said the meeting between was constructive.

''We've had a fairly good conversation across a range of issues, not least the issue of the day in Covid-19 and the response to all of that.

''We talked about the fact that nobody can predict what's coming at us in the winter and I reiterated the call for a British-Irish council meeting to happen with urgency.

''I think it's importantly that we work collectively across the two islands in terms of our response to Covid-19, so that was fairly positively received''.
