A photo emerged on social media showing people sitting in the aisles.

Irish Rail has apologised for a lack of social distancing on one of their trains yesterday.

A photo has circulated on social media showing apparent overcrowding on the Galway to Dublin train.

Model Holly Carpenter posted the image on twitter of her journey on Sunday afternoon with a group of young people sitting on the floor of the train.

She wrote: ‘50% of the seats are marked off so that people can socially distance – yet every carriage corridor looks like this. Impossible to get to the toilet without being on top of one & other. I don’t mean to sound negative – but this is not right.’

Barry Kenny from Irish Rail says they’re working to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

''We're firstly obviously sorry to people who traveled on that service'', he said.

''Our services at the moment are operating at 50% capacity, so while in normal circumstances there would've been sufficient seating for everybody, 50% of seats are currently blocked off''.

They have also admitted they should have had extra space on the train yesterday, and will revise capacity going forward.
