Flights to Ireland from virus hotspots such as Dallas resumed over the weekend.

An immunology expert has described the fact that tourists can still fly into Ireland from the likes of Texas and Arizona as 'outrageous' and 'disgraceful'.

Concerns have been raised at the amount of people visiting Ireland from America due to the surge in cases of COVID-19.

Flights to Ireland from virus hotspots such as Dallas resumed over the weekend.

Professor Luke O'Neill from the Trinity College school of Immunology believes it's a big mistake letting American tourists in.

''Here we have one of the most dangerous places in the world for Covid-19, which is to say Texas for example and Arizona'', he said.

''The numbers are terrifying there, they're breaking records every day with the numbers going up there.

''And yet people are coming into Ireland from those countries, I think it's disgraceful.

''Because we are trying to avoid a surge or a spike, and yet people are coming in from a country that's got a very high level of virus in the communities''.

Since the pandemic began, 135, 205 people have lost their lives in the US, with 3, 304,942 confirmed cases of the virus.
