The rule will be brought in soon.
Face-coverings are to become compulsory in taxis, after representatives for the industry called for the measure at the Dáil's coronavirus committee this afternoon.
And Deirdre Hanlon, from the Department of Transport, says it will be brought in shortly.
''Face coverings are important and we are moving to introduce mandatory face coverings in taxi's, she said.
''The first priority was to arrange it for mass transit, which is the buses and the trains and trams where you have large numbers of people moving together''.
