The Taoiseach has refused to give a timeline for when a decision will be made on moving the country to level five restrictions.
The cabinet sub-committee on Covid is expected to meet tomorrow afternoon with government sources saying they don't believe the decision can be delayed beyond the weekend.
National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended moving the entire country to a level five lockdown for six weeks.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the full social and economic impact of that will have to be considered.
''We have measures in place in Ireland that many European countries, even though they have higher numbers than we have, don't have in place yet'', he said.
''That said we take the advice from NPHET very seriously, this is going to get very good consideration and I don't have the timeline on it, the government will have to meet''.
Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said the issue can't be allowed to drag on until after the weekend.
''I think it's absolutely critical that the government meets urgently, this critical matter can't wait until Monday'', she said.
''I think people need and I think people deserve clarity, I think all matters need to be on the table and the government needs to decide their next steps forward''.
