''It's just a recognition that lower speeds save lives.''

Dubliners are being asked for their feedback on plans to make 30 kilometres an hour the default speed limit in the city.

The local authority had been introducing the lower limit in residential areas on a phased basis.

But under new Covid-19 plans, the zones will be extended to arterial routes including Rathmines and Harold's Cross Roads, Dorset Street and Gardiner Street.

Colm Ryder, chairman of cyclist.ie, says it's a big move from the city council.

''It the first attempt, certainly in Ireland of introducing such a default speed limit'', he said.

''It's just a recognition that lower speeds save lives, but also prevent more serious injuries''.
