It's set to be a very cold week.

There's a chance of snow in parts of the country. Snow showers are likely to hit areas in Leinster and Munster later this week.

Met Eireann says there's a very cold week in store, and that temperatures on Wednesday won't get above freezing.

Here's the full forecast for the week ahead:

Monday

Most places will be dry with sunny spells, but it'll be cloudier in parts of Leinster and Munster with wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet or snow. Highs of 5 degrees today. Monday night will be very cold with clear spells and widespread severe frost with ice in many areas. Temperatures are to fall to as low as -3 degrees, with the colder weather expected in Connacht and Ulster.

Tuesday

Tuesday will continue very cold with frost and ice clearing very slowly and persisting in some areas. Dry over much of the country with sunny spells. Expect wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow across parts of Leinster and east Munster. Temperatures of just 1 to 4 degrees during the day are likely. Tuesday night will be bitterly cold with a widespread sharp or severe frost and ice in many areas. Most areas will be dry and clear but scattered wintry showers will still affect the eastern half of Leinster. We could see lows of -6 degrees, with the coldest areas likely being Ulster and Connacht.

Wednesday

Wednesday will continue very cold with sunny spells. Frost and ice will clear slowly, but may linger in some areas. Highest temperatures of just 4 degrees. Cloud will increase in the northwest later. During the evening, rain will develop in the northwest and will spread southeastwards throughout Wednesday night, falling as sleet or snow in some areas. Lows of -2 degrees with frost and ice in many areas.

Thursday

On Thursday morning, rain, sleet and snow will continue to move southwards but will clear in the afternoon. That'll give sunny spells and some wintry showers in Ulster and Connacht. Highs of 4 degrees expected during the day. Thursday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells and a widespread severe frost and icy patches.

Friday

Friday will be another cold and mainly dry day with sunny spells. Highs of 5 degrees with a widespread severe frost on Friday night.

Next weekend

Next weekend will continue mainly dry. However, it will become somewhat cloudier with a little patchy rain or drizzle at times. It'll be less cold also with daytime temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees on Saturday and 5 to 8 degrees on Sunday. Frost will be less widespread and less severe.
