''A lot of work has gone into this and the plan is coming together''.

The Taoiseach says he's confident schools will be able to re-open fully next month.

An announcement from the Department of Education is expected in the coming days on how students will be able to return to the classroom.

It's expected millions of euro will be made available for structural changes to schools to allow social distancing and other safety measures.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin believes things are on track to see their return next month.

''A lot of work has gone into this and the plan is coming together, and I think we're in a strong position to achieve that objective'', he said.

''But I will go over to the department today, they've offered to brief me in relation to this and I'm confident we'll have the schools reopen''.

Schools in the republic have been shut for over four months after then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced they would shut on the evening of March 12th.
