Christmas is 78 days away.

We need more restrictions if we want to see our loved ones at Christmas, according to an infectious disease specialist.

NPHET is meeting again today after 611 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed yesterday and 5 more deaths.

It says we are now in a period of exponential growth and cases could exceed 1,000 a day in a matter of weeks.

Professor Sam McConkey from the Royal College of Surgeons feels stricter rules are needed to bring the numbers down.

''My view is that we do need to take increased restrictions what we've been doing in Dublin the last three weeks and over the rest of the country for the last few days has not been adequate to bring the increase of coronavirus in Ireland under control, Professor McConkey said.

''So we do need to take increased measures of some sort''.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, has said they will give specific consideration to Christmas - while NPHET's Professor Philip Nolan says the next three weeks are crucial.

''At various stages of the year different events and different circumstances create environments that we have to give specific consideration to, we will give specific consideration to Christmas'', he said.

''We hope we're not in a situation in disease terms where we're having to advise the population that that can't meet other households or travel outside of their house''.
