The boy's original sentence was deemed too lenient.

The father of a teenage boy who attempted to murder a woman he met online in Dublin in 2017, when he was aged just 15,  has told the Court of Appeal there's no excuse for the actions of his son on that day.

The boy, now 17-years-old, was initially sentenced to 11 years detention, after he pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Stephanie Ng in Dún Laoghaire, two days before Christmas.

The boy's father's been giving evidence at the re-sentencing hearing of his son, after his original sentence was deemed too lenient.

He added that no one should have to go through the trauma Ms Ng suffered and told the court his son exhibited some 'disturbing signs' from an early age.

When he was 14 he said he had a voice in his head telling him violent things and when gardaí came to arrest the boy on Christmas morning, his father said he was surprised but knew it was true.

He said he regretted his son not being hospitalised or being given the correct medication at an earlier age.

His son's been in Oberstown for 2 and a half years and is doing well and has completed his junior and leaving cert.

A decision on re-sentencing will be made tomorrow.
