The National Public Health Emergency Team is discussing whether the lockdown in the midlands should be lifted. NPHET is considering whether or not it's advisable to bring Laois, Offaly and Kildare out of lockdown this weekend.

However, with a spike in cases across the country in the last two weeks it's a decision that won't be straight forward.

Speaking before the meeting, NPHET member Dr Mary Favier said there were still some worries:

"There are considerable concerns about community transmission all over the country but particularly in some of those counties and so, it'll need to be looked at", she explained.

Meanwhile, the government is under pressure to avoid any further confusion around it's messaging. It had to issue a clarification on the number of people allowed in the likes cinemas, theatres and art galleries - which is 50.

It came after Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said yesterday that only 6 could gather indoors.

Junior Minister Josepha Madigan admits communication needs to be better:

"I think that there has been a lack of synergy in certain circumstances", she said.

"I think that has to be eradicated. Communication is the key to this ultimately and it's about getting each department to talk to each other. it's about getting ministers to talk to each other".

Once the NPHET meeting is over, the recommendations will be passed onto the Health Minister for consideration by the Cabinet.
