Many parents chose to keep their kids at home.

Just 7 of 125 students at a county Mayo primary school turned up this morning.

Many parents chose to keep their children home after a number of cases of Covid-19 were confirmed at Claremorris Boys National School.

At least 12 cases of covid-19 have been confirmed at the school since the mid-term break.

In response the school felt it should close, but the Department of Education instructed it to remain open.

Parent Catherine Walsh chose to keep her son at home today:

''We're firmly backing our principle Mark and the board in their efforts to try and stop the spread in Clarmorris'', she said.

Forty-one of the 125 students at the school have been instructed to self-isolate, leaving 84 students that could have attended school this morning, but just 7 did, while 4 out of 7 staff members are present.

Spokesperson for the Mayo GP Society Dr. Ken Egan says local GPs support the school's position.

''You have the Department of Education officials  in Dublin with this book of rules and a calculator and they have no regards for the Claremorris community, all they're concerned about seemingly to me anyway is statistics'', he said.

The School has yet to inform the Department of Education of it's low attendance today.
