A ban on visiting people's homes comes into effect at midnight, with some exceptions.

A Government Minister says banning household visits could be a ‘gamechanger’ in curbing the spread of Covid-19.

A nationwide ban on visiting people's homes is coming into place from midnight with exceptions for compassionate or caring purposes.

While level four restrictions will also come into effect for Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan, meaning all non-essential retail will shut, a maximum of 6 people from two households can meet outdoors and club championship games are to stop.

The new measures will stay in place for four weeks until November 10th.

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris believes banning household visits is difficult but essential.

''We're about a week into really pushing level three nationwide, we need to try and give it a little more time'', he said.

''And that's why the Taoiseach last night and the Tánaiste and others were rightly saying, lets take these enhanced level three levels.

''We do think that painful and difficult and annoying as it is, that household visits could potentially be a gamechanger if we got it right''.

Yesterday saw the highest number of Covid cases recorded in a single day at 1,095.

Of those new cases:

  • 529 are men / 552 are women
  • 70% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 31 years old
  • 246 in Dublin, 185 in Meath,128 in Cavan, 118 in Cork, 63 in Kildare and the remaining 342 cases are spread across all remaining counties.
