It's been found to cause respiratory and eye irritation, headaches and dermatitis.
A brand of hand sanitiser used in schools all over Ireland has been recalled due to health concerns.
Virapro hand sanitiser has been found to cause respiratory and eye irritation, as well as headaches and dermatitis.
It's one of eleven brands of sanitiser recommended by the Department of Education, which stated that schools can close today if necessary.
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire says it's such short notice for principals and parents.
''I am aware of schools that did contact parents to say they weren't opening'', he said.
''That's very late at night, I know it would've caused upset as it's the last day before mid-term and a lot of students would've been dressing up.
''Aside from that it's enormously disruptive, the communication to schools really isn't good enough''.
The Department of Education said, schools that are impacted can make local arrangements to purchase stocks of hand sanitiser and can maximise the use of hand washing to support necessary hand hygiene.
If an affected school judges it necessary to do so, they can choose to close for the day or close early today.
The Department of Education said that if a school is having difficulty sourcing replacement hand sanitiser, they should contact the Department on the Covid -19 helpline and email address supplied to schools.
Additional funding will be provided to schools to enable them to purchase the necessary supplies from an alternative supplier.
