There's been a 12% increase in grocery sales nationwide as people prepare for more Covid-19 restrictions.

Research from Kantar shows €100 million more was spent in the period compared with the same time last year.

€1.8 million less has been spent by Irish consumers so far this year on tins of chocolate and biscuits.

Alcohol sales in supermarkets has increased by 53% as people see drinking at home as a better option than going to a pub or restaurant. There is also a belief that people may be recreating restaurant meals at home with the sales of international food increasing by 25%.

Researchers say the trends in Dublin over the past couple of weeks in Level 3 restrictions may be a sign of what is about to come for the rest of the country with the capital having the largest growth in grocery sales over the past month.

In the capital, sales went up by almost 20% - which is worth nearly €50 million. And compared with last year, the sales of disinfectants and antiseptics in Dublin has risen by 67%.
