Australian officials have banned international flights from landing in Melbourne for two weeks after a new outbreak of Covid-19.

Other lockdown measures - covering 300,000 people in suburbs - are being introduced until the 29th.

Reuters reports that from midnight on Wednesday, more than 30 suburbs in the city will return to stage three restrictions. These restrictions are the third-strictest and means residents will be confined to home except for grocery shopping, health appointments, work, caregiving, and exercise only.

Health officials also plan to carry out a higher number of Covid tests over the coming days.

Some of the infections were spread by staff working in quarantine hotels for foreign travellers.
